So, you might be wondering what the name of this blog means. Hats off to those of you who already know at least half of it. “A Perfect Day for Bananafish” is a short story by J.D. Salinger. I love this story as it is the only story that shows one of Salinger’s main characters in person. Seymour Glass. I’d name my own child “Seymour” if I had one. You should just read it, but I’ll tell you about the bananafish. Seymour tells a little girl at the beach named Sybil about bananafish. Bananafish go into a hole and overeat until they can’t get out and die of banana fever. So, even though I didn’t even realize it when I started this blog, it is really fitting.
The disco part is something else, though. I don’t even like disco, but my husband and I were watching Christmas Evil (1980) and he said something about the music in the movie, saying something like “oh yeah, this was the end of the disco era.” And he said that as soon as I was trying to figure out something to put after “Bananafish.”
I think it would really suck to be in a bananafish disco, with all those fat bananafish doing the hustle. Thus “Bananafish Disco,” a swift kick in the ass, was born.
