Yesterday I discovered the Environmental Working Group’s website, specifically the “Skin Deep” section. I don’t know how I hadn’t heard about this before . How exciting is this?! I can look up the cosmetics I use and see what they are rated according to toxicity, allergies, etc. I actually found that the sunscreen I use is not as good as I thought – I figured CeraVe’s products would be lower in chemicals since they are generally thought of as basic and free of extraneous ingredients. The AM Lotion scored a 6, which while not the worst, I have found an alternative in the Kiss My Face Face Factor SPF 30 lotion, which scored a 2. I ordered some from Amazon on a recommendation from a friend. I’m also sticking with the CeraVe Foaming Cleanser that I use. Next up is to find some shampoo and conditioner that scores low on the EWG’s scale.
I also downloaded the Skin Deep App! I immediately went out to Walgreen’s and scanned products like crazy. It’s the little things. I can’t wait to get to a Sephora and really try it out.
Last night I also decided to give coconut oil as a moisturizer a try once again. I’ve tried so hard to use it as a moisturizer, but the greasy feeling just makes me feel dirty. I still, at 34, have the occasional blemish, and I hope I can rely on the antibacterial qualities of coconut oil instead of my glycolic acid or retinol to stave away unsightly acne. I decided to whip coconut oil according to this recipe with some vitamin E. I tried it last night, and it definitely is greasy, but maybe I’ll get used to it. Also, I’m not sure mine really whipped up like the recipe, but the Vitamin E is definitely incorporated into the coconut oil!
I love coconut oil, but putting it on my face is terrifying! Gives me zits every time…according to these people it’s very comedogenic: https://www.beneficialbotanicals.com/facts-figures/comedogenic-rating.html
